Injury Spotlight: Pregnancy/Postpartum Low Back & Hip Pain

Exercises That Can Help Relieve Hip Pain During Pregnancy

1. Fire log pose. Sit comfortably on the edge of a folded blanket and cross one ankle over the opposite knee. If you can stack the other ankle and knee too, do so or otherwise just relax the bottom leg out. From here, just sit or carefully and lean forward. You should feel a stretch in the outer hip right away.

2. Standing sideways stretch. Stand next to a doorway and align your shoulder with it. Then cross your inner leg over the outer leg and lean towards the door frame, holding onto it with both hands. If that is not enough of a stretch, then try and push into the hand which is on top.

3. Standing ankle to knee. If you have good balance, this pose is excellent to open the hips and create strength in the standing leg. Find a ledge at about hip height or higher and stand in front of it. Then place your ankle on the opposite knee and fold forward. Keep your standing leg bent softly — the more you lean forward the more intense the stretch will be.

4. Lie on your side with a pillow between your knees. This is not technically an exercise, but it should relieve pain, particularly if it is associated with sciatic pain. Lie down on your side and stack your hips, knees and ankles in two 90 degree angles. Pull your knees up in front of you and keep space in the knee. Then place a pillow along your lower leg and relax. Lying like this for at least 15 minutes can do wonders for the spine.

How Is Pelvic Pain Diagnosed In Pregnancy

If you’re experiencing pain anywhere during pregnancy, it’s important to tell your doctor or midwife. She’ll want to make sure your pain isn’t due to any other health problems, and she’ll offer options for relief.

Your healthcare provider will examine you and may have you do certain movement tests to help pinpoint where the pain is coming from. In some cases, you may need to have an ultrasound or magnetic resonance imaging , which provides pictures of the soft tissue and bones.

Pain In The Right Hip During Pregnancy

If you are pregnant and experience pain in your right hip, you are not alone. Many pregnant women experience this type of pain, which is often referred to as hip pain during pregnancy. While the cause of this pain is not always known, there are several things that you can do to help alleviate it.

One of the most common causes of hip pain during pregnancy is changes in your bodys center of gravity. As your baby grows, your body begins to adjust to accommodate the new weight. This can lead to pain and discomfort in your hips, back, and other areas.

Hip pain during pregnancy can also be caused by ligament laxity. As your body prepares for labor, the ligaments that support your joints become more lax. This can lead to pain and discomfort in your hips, as well as other areas of your body.

There are several things that you can do to help alleviate hip pain during pregnancy. One of the most important is to maintain good posture. Be sure to stand up straight and avoid slouching. You should also try to avoid crossing your legs, as this can put additional strain on your hips.

You can also try to exercise regularly. This can help to strengthen the muscles around your hips and help to support your bodys new center of gravity. Be sure to talk to your doctor before starting any new exercise regimen, however, as some exercises may not be safe for pregnant women.

You may have pain or difficulty with activities such as:

  • Climbing stairs
  • Getting in/out of the car and driving

Other symptoms of PGP may include clicking or grinding sensations on movement or feeling that the pelvic joints are loose/unstable. The joints are not damaged PGP is usually a self-limiting condition and most women recover completely within the first month following birth, although 1-2% may experience pain for up to one year.

Incorrect Posture Or Sleeping Position

If you experience hip pain during pregnancy at night, it may be because of sleeping on a side for long. Sleeping on your back during pregnancy is not a good practice. It is always recommended that you use extra padding and a pregnancy pillow while sleeping. Placing a warm wheat bag near your hips reduces the pain. While walking or sitting you must put equal weight on both legs and maintain an upright position.

Use A Pregnancy Pillow And Cushions

For instance, if you have pain in right hip then place cushions under it. Squeezing a pillow under your hips joint will alleviate sore hip. Using cushions prevents pain in hips.

How to sleep with hip pain? Place a cushion next to your baby bump to avoid toppling over your bump and lift your hips. Sharp pain in the hip can be cured by placing a wheat bag near it. The pillows and cushions you use counter the pelvic pressure during pregnancy.

Pregnancy Left Side Pain

There are many different types of left side pain that can be associated with pregnancy. Lower Back Pain In Pregnancy

Mechanical instability in the lumbar spine and pelvis commonly results in lower back pain in pregnant women.

  • The lumbar spine undergoes compensatory lordosisan increase in the reverse C-shaped curvaturewhich causes excess strain on the lumbar joints, muscles, ligaments, and discs.
  • The psoas muscle in the hip, which stabilizes the spine and helps in hip and leg movements, is shortened due to the compensatory lordosis, exacerbating the lower back pain symptoms.2

Lower back pain symptoms may start at any time during pregnancy. These symptoms may feel like:

  • A dull ache or sharp, burning pain in the lower back area
  • One-sided pain in the right or left area of the lower and/or mid-back
  • Pain that radiates into the back of the thigh and leg, and sometimes into the foot
  • Foot drop, a condition characterized by the inability to lift the front part of the foot while walking

Sciatica symptoms typically occur if a lower lumbar and/or upper sacral nerve root is impinged in the lower spine due to a lumbar herniated disc, spondylolisthesis, facet joint disorder, or muscle sprain and spasm.

Women with a history of back pain, pre-existing lower back disorders, multiple pregnancies, and/or those who are in the younger or older age-groups may be at a higher risk of developing lower back pain in pregnancy.2
