Young people ages 13 to 30 who filled an opioid prescription immediately before or after wisdom teeth extraction were nearly 2.7 times as likely as their peers to still be filling opioid prescriptions weeks or months later.

Those in their late teens and 20s had the highest odds of persistent opioid use compared with those of middle and high school age, a University of Michigan team reports in a research letter published this week in JAMA.

Led by Calista Harbaugh, M.D., a U-M research fellow and surgical resident, the researchers used insurance data to focus on young people who were opioid naïve in other words, those who hadnt received an opioid prescription in the six months before their wisdom teeth surgery and who didnt have any other procedures requiring anesthesia in the following year.

Extraction is often the best option for wisdom tooth pain, especially if it has been caused by infection or impaction. Unfortunately, this might not stop all pain or discomfort immediately

Instead, because of the size and position of the wisdom teeth, you can be left with slight swelling and discomfort at the site where the wisdom tooth used to be.

Its natural to feel uncomfortable once the effects of the anaesthetic have worn off and your mouth is likely to feel sore for several days. The speed at which it heals will depend on the size of the wound and whether you have stitches.

Your dentist may prescribe a course of antibiotics to prevent infection and will suggest the best over the counter painkillers to relieve wisdom tooth pain.

Don’t Miss: How To Stop Pain From Wisdom Teeth

Should You Remove Them Just In Case

Impacted wisdom teeth have been a driving force in the preventative removal of most wisdom teeth in countries like the United States. Not all health organizations agree that this is necessary, however, and not all countries regularly extract wisdom teeth for preventative reasons.

In 2008, the American Public Health Association rejected the preventative removal of wisdom teeth, arguing that dangers from surgical removal outweigh the risks of leaving the teeth alone. The Cochrane Collaboration found that as many as 60% of all wisdom teeth removals could be eliminated if these teeth were only taken out when pain or other problems emerged. They also disputed the notion that impacted wisdom teeth crowd out other teeth.

Even so, there is evidence that these teeth should come out. Even when they don’t show other symptoms, impacted wisdom teeth can cause problems later on. When not removed, between 30% and 60% of these teeth lead to problems within 12 years that require their removal.

What Are The Options For Wisdom Teeth Removal

    Wisdom Tooth Pain Home Remedies

To avoid costly surgery, many people are opting for wisdom teeth removal methods that are less invasive. Dental professionals recommend that the wisdom teeth be removed before they grow too large and cause problems. In this article, we have mentioned some of the options that are available to Teethos patents which are well known Dental clinics for their 10 years of dental service in Kochi. There are a few options for removal, including

    A. Surgical extraction: The dentist can remove the wisdom teeth with a surgical procedure. This is often the most expensive option, but it can provide the fastest relief from pain. Oral surgery is the most common method of removing wisdom teeth. The surgeon will use a local anesthetic to numb the area, then will use a drill to cut into the tooth. Once the tooth is exposed, the surgeon will use a dental instrument to pry it out. The surgeon will then use stitches to close area

    B. Painless wisdom teeth removal: This method involves the use of a special type of anesthesia that does not make the patient feel any pain. The dentist will remove the wisdom teeth with a high-speed drill.

    D. Laser extraction: This is a new option that uses a laser to remove wisdom teeth. It is less invasive than surgical extraction and has less recovery time.

When Wisdom Teeth Grow In Wrong

Wisdom teeth can also be referred to as third molars. These teeth often fail to break through the gums, or only partially emerge from the gum. This may require you to get them removed later on in life.

Also, wisdom teeth can grow in curved or at awkward angles that may cause them to become impacted. If this happens, your dentist will recommend having them removed as soon as possible to avoid other complications like gum damage and tooth decay.

Will I Have To Get My Wisdom Teeth Removed

The only way to know for sure is to visit your dentist. They can tell you whether or not you need to get them removed, and if so, how soon it should happen.

If they are impacted , then the answer is absolutely. But even if they arent, its up to you. Removal is an option if they are causing you pain or problems in your mouth.

You will also want to consider how much the wisdom teeth are affecting the other teeth in your mouth. This may also be a reason to get them removed especially if you have invested in braces and have straight teeth that are in jeopardy now.

What Can I Expect After Wisdom Teeth Removal

We all heal differently, but this is what you can expect as a general guideline:

    • Your face will be swollen for at least 24 hours. You may even experience bruises and stitches that need to heal. This usually takes the most time, about 7 days or so. After this point, your face should return to normal.
    • Youll want to avoid opening and closing your mouth much, especially in the first few days. This will help you heal faster and feel better.
    • Youll want to eat soft foods that wont hurt when you bite into them or cause too much pressure. Soup is a great option and recommend, and then you can move on to mashed potatoes and fruits like applesauce.
    • Its up to you if you want to brush your teeth after the surgery, but consider leaving it for at least one day afterward. This will give you more time with stitches in place and ensure that they heal correctly.

Unfortunately growing in wisdom teeth is unavoidable, but it doesnt mean that they will hurt. And if they do, you have many options to deal with the pain. I hope this article has helped you feel better prepared to deal with wisdom teeth growing pains. Good luck!

    Recovery After Surgical Extraction

How To Stop Wisdom Tooth Pain At Home – Advice From A Dentist

You should plan to take it easy for the first couple of days after your surgery. Your mouth will probably bleed for the first day, so keep enough clean gauze handy to staunch it. Pain and swelling will go down gradually over the next few days, and while it may be painful, you should have pain medicine available to provide more comfort.

Follow your surgeon’s instructions carefully. Your mouth won’t open all the way for about a week. During that time, plan on eating soft foods that don’t require too much chewing. You should be able to return to your everyday life after a few days, but keep in mind that your mouth won’t be fully healed for another four to six weeks.

Few problems can bring a person to their knees like a toothacheand few teeth can hurt as bad as a wisdom tooth. Wisdom tooth pain is like no other: constant throbbing, jaw and earaches, swelling inside the mouth as well as in the cheeks and throat.

When wisdom teeth grow in between the ages of 17 and 21, many people do not have room for the wisdom teeththe third molars to fit into their mouth. When that is the case, the wisdom teeth have nowhere to go and begin to push against the roots of the other teeth or against the sides of the jaw and facial bones. The results of this constant pressure are the pain and swelling that accompany wisdom tooth growth.

    Saltwater Swish And Rinse

Add 1 or 2 teaspoons of salt into a glass of warm water and mix until dissolved. Swish the mixture in the mouth, especially around the painful area, for one minute and spit out, do not swallow.

Repeat as needed several times throughout the day. The saltwater will help promote wound healing and clean out stuck debris. Relief should be felt after a few rinses.
