So you’ve got knee pain from running. Whether you’re a beginner, or a seasoned marathoner, having sore knees after running or during your runs is frustrating. We spoke to sports doctor Jordan Metzl, who explains four of the most common causes of knee pain from running, and what you can do about them:

Heres How You Can Prevent Runners Knee :

Of course, the best thing to do is to prevent runners knee in the first place. You can do this if you optimize your running style and incorporate more three-dimensional movements into your exercise, such as side steps, cross-steps, running backward and running on different surfaces. How Is Iliotibial Band Syndrome Treated

Your healthcare provider might suggest several different treatment strategies to help ease your symptoms. These might include:

  • Limiting activities that make your knee pain worse for a while , and returning to these activities slowly

  • Taking over-the-counter pain medicines
  • Getting corticosteroid shots to decrease inflammation
  • Making changes to your activity, like lowering your bicycle seat for cycling or improving your running form

You Might Have Iliotibial Band Syndrome

If you feel pain outside your kneecap, chances are you have iliotibial band syndrome. The IT band is a stretch of fibers that runs from your hip to the knee on the outer side of the leg and is supported by the bursa to function smoothly, Dr. Logan explains.

Repeatedly bending and extending your knee while running can irritate the IT band and the tissues around it, causing pain and swelling known as IT band syndrome, according to Cedars Sinai. In addition to pain on the outside part of your knee, IT band syndrome can cause clicking, popping and snapping, per the Hospital for Special Surgery.

“Hip abduction is required for any activity that involves one of your feet being off the ground. Your hip abductors keep your pelvis relatively level when walking or running when the opposite side foot comes off the ground. The IT band helps with this, which helps explain why it gets tight,” Dr. Logan says.

“For the IT band to be stretched, your knee has to cross the midline of your body,” he explains. “This rarely occurs during straight-line running, so all it gets to do is contract over and over.”

“I also notice more pain myself when my shoes have too many miles on them. Spend the money to get fitted for the right shoe for your foot shape, and keep track of your miles,” he says. When you feel like your running shoes are worn out, toss them and get a new pair to prevent injury and pain.

Many runners experience outside knee pain, especially when they start to increase their mileage. The most common cause of this pain is IT band syndrome, which is caused by inflammation of the IT band, a band of tissue that runs from the hip to the knee. When Should You Stop Running Because Of Knee Pain

As tempting as it may be to push through discomfort, “any level of knee pain can be an indicator that you should stop and further examine the cause,” said Jey. Otherwise, you put yourself at risk for more issues down the line. Plus, if your cranky knees are the result of taking your running from zero to 100 too quickly, rest might be just what you need to kick your pain to the curb.

“If you are sore for a day or two as you ramp up your running program, that is fine, but joint pain is not normal,” said Dr. Strickland. So go ahead and drop that “no pain, no gain” mentality.

Outer Knee Pain Treatment

The best course of treatment for lateral knee pain will depend on the underlying cause of the outer knee pain. It will usually include a combination of exercises, physical therapy and rest from aggravating activities and may also include knee injections and surgery.

Just a moment ago, I mentioned the repetitive nature of running. In fact its exactly this type of repetitive pounding that our knees get when running that can cause injuries.

Running is a load-bearing activity, and obviously harder on our knees than swimming or cycling, and that fact isnt going to change!

But the thing we can change is the repetitive nature of the lading. If youre only ever running on concrete, pounding the pavements, there wont be a huge amount variation in the loading your knees experience from stride to stride.
