How Long Do Trap Muscles Take To Heal

When Do You Need To See Your Doctor
If your trapezius pain is chronic or is worsening over time, schedule an appointment with your doctor. Pain may hinder your usual performance everyday and may prevent you from relaxing comfortably.
Once your doctor has gone through your health history and your physical exam results, you may be prescribed to get physical therapy or take regular medication.
How Is A Trapezius Muscle Strain Diagnosed
Your doctor will probably be able to tell if you have a pulled trapezius muscle based on your symptoms, your medical history, and a physical exam. If you have a grade III strain, your doctor may be able to feel where the muscle has ripped completely apart. You may need an X-ray to rule out a fracture, dislocation, or another type of injury.â
Pure muscle injuries can’t be seen on an X-ray, though. In these cases, MRI may help, showing where the injury happened and if there was a complete rupture. An MRI may also show a collection of blood, called a hematoma, that can occur after an injury.

How Is It Diagnosed
When you seek the help of a physical therapist, the physical therapist performs a comprehensive evaluation and asks questions about your pain and your daily activities. These may include:
- How and when the pain started: Did the pain begin spontaneously or was there any trauma or popping experienced in the cervical region?
- Where are the symptoms located, and have they changed location or intensity since the onset?
- What makes the symptoms better or worse?
- What type of work do you perform?
- What hobbies or household activities do you regularly perform?
Your physical therapist will gently test the movement of your neck and arms. The therapist will check your tendon reflexes and strength, and conduct special tests on your neck and upper extremity to determine which spinal nerve root may be involved, and to rule out other conditions. To provide a definitive diagnosis, your therapist may collaborate with an orthopedist or other health care provider. The orthopedist may order further tests, such as magnetic resonance imaging or electromyography . An MRI can show soft tissues, including the spinal cord and nerve roots. This test can determine what is causing the compression on the nerves, including disc bulges or disc herniation. An EMG measures the nerve and muscle function. This test can tell how well your spinal nerves are communicating to your muscles.
When To See A Doctor
In the majority of people, trapezius pain can be successfully treated with stretching, strengthening exercises, and short-term use of pain medicines and ice/heat application. But its important that you seek professional medical care if your trapezius pain is severe and does not improve with home treatments. You should see a doctor for trapezius pain if:4

- The pain has been present for more than 7-10 days.

What Does The Upper Trapezius Do
The upper trapezius can upwardly rotate and elevate the scapula. While the attachments at the nuchal ligament, occiput and cervical vertebrae are usually considered the origin, remember that muscle origin and insertion are simply a convenient way to organize what we know about a muscles attachments. Muscles can create movement in either direction depending on the circumstances. If we keep in mind the attachments of the upper trapezius, then we could imagine that it could also contribute to extension of the head and neck.

Half Kneeling Position
The half kneeling position places the pelvis and lumbar spine into an optimal position which directly influences the neck and head to be in a proper position, relieving abnormal mechanical stress on nerves that innervate the upper trapezius. To perform, get into a half kneeling position, as shown in the picture. On the kneeling leg, you should not be putting any weight on the knee cap, instead you should be feeling slight pressure on the bone under the knee cap. Make sure your knees are bent at 90 degrees. Rotate your pelvis back . You may hold onto a stable surface to maintain good balance in the beginning. Hold this position for 30 seconds and repeat 3 times on both legs. This stretch can be progressed by raising your arm up on the side where the knee is on the ground.
Complexity Of The Upper Trapezius Muscle
The upper trapezius is a complex muscle in that the muscle crosses over a dozen joints. Therefore, any shift in the spine such as poor posture or muscle imbalance can significantly affect the muscle. And as mentioned above, shortening of any one of the joints will involuntarily contract the upper trapezius and produce knots and pain.
Equally important, the upper trapezius is innervated by the spinal accessory nerve, which is also very intricate. In most cases, nerves travel from the spinal cord directly to the muscles. However, as the name implies, the spinal accessory nerve is unique in that it is composed of two parts: from the spinal cord and from the brain. This is the only nerve in our body that enters and then exits the skull which then innervates to the upper trapezius muscle and the sternocleidomastoid.
