How Long Do Trap Muscles Take To Heal

4 Techniques To Fix Your Tight Trapezius | Neck Pain & Pinched Nerve

The trapezius muscles, also known as the traps, are a large, diamond-shaped muscle group that lies in the upper back. The traps are responsible for moving the shoulder blades and neck, and help keep the spine aligned. Trapezius injuries are common, and can range from a simple strain to a full-blown tear. How long it takes the traps to heal depends on the extent of the injury.

If you have a minor strain or sprain, the muscle will likely heal within a week or two. However, if you have a more severe injury, such as a tear, it may take several weeks or even months for the muscle to heal completely. In some cases, you may need surgery to repair the muscle.

While you are healing, you can do some things to help speed up the process. Rest the muscle as much as possible, and avoid any activities that cause pain. Ice the muscle for 15 to 20 minutes a few times a day, and take ibuprofen or another pain reliever to help reduce inflammation. When you are ready to start exercising again, start slowly and gradually increase the intensity and duration of your workouts.

If you are experiencing any pain or discomfort, be sure to speak to your doctor or physical therapist for help. They can provide you with specific exercises and stretches to help you heal the muscle and prevent further injury.

Slowly Work Your Way Out

Once you have spent about 30 seconds massaging the muscle at the base of your neck, you can start to work your way out toward the end of your shoulder.

  • Inch your way across your trapezius muscle in close increments, spending at least 30 seconds at each point.
  • Follow the muscle until you reach the end of your shoulder.
  • Use slow, rhythmic movements to apply enough pressure that you feel “the good hurt.” If the pressure is not enjoyable or makes you wince, then it’s too much.

In the field of massage therapy, a level of pressure that slightly hurts but still feels good is called “the good hurt.”

Exercise Is The Cure For Tight Traps

Like all muscles, the trapezius is prone to overuse and injury. The cause can vary. Maybe youve been swimming regularly. Maybe you just started working out and put excessive stress on your shoulders and neck. You might have carried a heavy object. Or, perhaps your job requires you to sit in one position for a long time. Any of these scenarios can lead to tightness and pain in the trapezius muscles.

First, know that you are not alone. About 1 in 5 adults have ongoing pain in the neck and shoulders. Longstanding trapezius pain is somewhat more common in women compared to men.8

Fortunately, you dont have to live with these symptoms. Physical activity and exercises are proven to be effective for both acute and chronic trapezius myalgia . There are specific strengthening exercises that can significantly reduce trapezius pain. By following a regular exercise program, you can prevent further trapezius pain from occurring.

The Injurymap app has many stretches and strengthening exercises for the trapezius specifically and the neck and shoulders in general. Include these exercises in your regular workout routine. This will help reduce trapezius pain and strengthen the muscle to prevent future injuries.

Do Trap Muscles Look Good

Many people are wondering if trap muscles look good. The answer to this question is a little bit ambiguous, as it depends on a persons individual body type and muscle definition. However, in general, having well-defined traps can give a persons body an impressive and muscular appearance.

The traps are a group of muscles located in the upper back, just below the neck. They are responsible for moving the shoulder blades and helping to lift the arms. The traps can be worked out by doing exercises such as shrugs, lateral raises, and front raises.

Having well-defined traps can give a persons body an impressive and muscular appearance.

If you are looking to build up your trap muscles, there are a few things you can do. First, make sure that you are including trap-focused exercises in your workout routine. Second, make sure that you are eating a healthy diet that is rich in protein. Protein is essential for muscle growth and repair. Third, be sure to get plenty of rest. Muscles grow while you are resting, not while you are working out. Fourth, stay hydrated. Water is essential for muscle function and growth.

If you are looking to reduce the size of your traps, you can do the opposite of the things listed above. First, avoid trap-focused exercises. Second, eat a diet that is low in protein. Third, get plenty of rest. Fourth, drink plenty of water.

Exercises For The Trapezius

Neck pain Myofascial trigger point Trapezius muscle Spasm, headache ...

Stretching and strengthening exercises may help prevent future trapezius strains once youre ready. For 2 weeks or less after an acute strain, stretching should be avoided. But as pain reduces, stretching can and should be resumed.

One simple trapezius stretch is done by looking straight ahead with your shoulder relaxed. Lower your right shoulder and bend your neck to the left, as though trying to touch your left shoulder with your left ear. Hold for 20 seconds, then slowly straighten your neck and do the same on the right side.

For strengthening the trapezius, try an exercise called a scapula setting.

Lie on your stomach with a pillow or towel under your forehead for comfort. With your arms at your sides, pull your shoulder blades together and down as far as you can and hold for 10 seconds. Try performing 1 set of 10 repetitions 3 times a week.

When Do You Need To See Your Doctor

If your trapezius pain is chronic or is worsening over time, schedule an appointment with your doctor. Pain may hinder your usual performance everyday and may prevent you from relaxing comfortably.

Once your doctor has gone through your health history and your physical exam results, you may be prescribed to get physical therapy or take regular medication.

How Is A Trapezius Muscle Strain Diagnosed

Upper Trapezius Release – Trigger Point Release Neck Pain Relief

Your doctor will probably be able to tell if you have a pulled trapezius muscle based on your symptoms, your medical history, and a physical exam. If you have a grade III strain, your doctor may be able to feel where the muscle has ripped completely apart. You may need an X-ray to rule out a fracture, dislocation, or another type of injury.â

Pure muscle injuries can’t be seen on an X-ray, though. In these cases, MRI may help, showing where the injury happened and if there was a complete rupture. An MRI may also show a collection of blood, called a hematoma, that can occur after an injury.

How Is It Diagnosed

When you seek the help of a physical therapist, the physical therapist performs a comprehensive evaluation and asks questions about your pain and your daily activities. These may include:

  • How and when the pain started: Did the pain begin spontaneously or was there any trauma or popping experienced in the cervical region?
  • Where are the symptoms located, and have they changed location or intensity since the onset?
  • What makes the symptoms better or worse?
  • What type of work do you perform?
  • What hobbies or household activities do you regularly perform?

Your physical therapist will gently test the movement of your neck and arms. The therapist will check your tendon reflexes and strength, and conduct special tests on your neck and upper extremity to determine which spinal nerve root may be involved, and to rule out other conditions. To provide a definitive diagnosis, your therapist may collaborate with an orthopedist or other health care provider. The orthopedist may order further tests, such as magnetic resonance imaging or electromyography . An MRI can show soft tissues, including the spinal cord and nerve roots. This test can determine what is causing the compression on the nerves, including disc bulges or disc herniation. An EMG measures the nerve and muscle function. This test can tell how well your spinal nerves are communicating to your muscles.

When To See A Doctor

In the majority of people, trapezius pain can be successfully treated with stretching, strengthening exercises, and short-term use of pain medicines and ice/heat application. But its important that you seek professional medical care if your trapezius pain is severe and does not improve with home treatments. You should see a doctor for trapezius pain if:4

  • The pain is severe .
  • You are unable to move your neck and shoulder.
  • The pain has been present for more than 7-10 days.
  • There are signs of infection, such as fever and redness of the skin in the trapezius area.
  • There is a visible deformity, such as one shoulder is lower than the other at rest.

What Does The Upper Trapezius Do

The upper trapezius can upwardly rotate and elevate the scapula. While the attachments at the nuchal ligament, occiput and cervical vertebrae are usually considered the origin, remember that muscle origin and insertion are simply a convenient way to organize what we know about a muscles attachments. Muscles can create movement in either direction depending on the circumstances. If we keep in mind the attachments of the upper trapezius, then we could imagine that it could also contribute to extension of the head and neck.

Causes Of Lower Trapezius Pain

Neck pain treatment

If youre experiencing neck pain, you have likely strained or injured your trapezius muscle . Common causes of this muscle pain include:

  • StressStress and shoulder pain are linked. If you have been experiencing frequent stress, it can cause your shoulder and neck muscles to tense up, causing discomfort and tightness.
  • Poor posture Be aware of your posture. Hunching may cause increased stress on the trapezius, resulting in rounded shoulder and chronic neck pain.
  • Overuse or underuseExercise is great, but overuse of this muscle will result in trapezius muscle pain. Be aware of your daily activities and make sure you arent putting too much strain on the area, which could ultimately lead to injury.

However, theres still hope. You can rid yourself of lower trapezius pain and get back to optimal health with these simple exercises. The first thing we can all do is to be more aware of your posture by incorporating variousprehab exercises into your daily routine. Secondly, we should work on stretching tight chest muscles. Lastly, we should work to strengthen our weak lower trap muscle.

Are Neck And Shoulder Pain Connected

âNeck and shoulder pain so commonly overlap that some refer to it as ‘shneck’ pain.â Why? Because the neck and shoulder are intimately connected by multiple nerve pathways. When injury occurs, the brain can’t always trace pain pathways back to their source, and what we feel may not be what is really going on.

Position : Before Sleeping Place A Folded Pillow In Between Your Top Arm And Side

Folding a pillow and placing it under your arm will reduce the amount of stretch in your upper trapezius muscle. Your upper traps stretch from the base of your skull to the top of your shoulder. This muscle is often responsible for both neck and shoulder pain. Taking pressure off this muscle will likely relieve any tension and discomfort you feel.

Simple Exercises To Perform

These 3 exercises will help to encourage your body to be in more of an upright posture. Its important to do these daily to combat the forward head posture position we undoubtedly get into on a daily basis.

Half Kneeling Position

The half kneeling position places the pelvis and lumbar spine into an optimal position which directly influences the neck and head to be in a proper position, relieving abnormal mechanical stress on nerves that innervate the upper trapezius. To perform, get into a half kneeling position, as shown in the picture. On the kneeling leg, you should not be putting any weight on the knee cap, instead you should be feeling slight pressure on the bone under the knee cap. Make sure your knees are bent at 90 degrees. Rotate your pelvis back . You may hold onto a stable surface to maintain good balance in the beginning. Hold this position for 30 seconds and repeat 3 times on both legs. This stretch can be progressed by raising your arm up on the side where the knee is on the ground.

Complexity Of The Upper Trapezius Muscle

Trapezius: Corrective Exercises to Stop Neck and Shoulder Pain

The upper trapezius is a complex muscle in that the muscle crosses over a dozen joints. Therefore, any shift in the spine such as poor posture or muscle imbalance can significantly affect the muscle. And as mentioned above, shortening of any one of the joints will involuntarily contract the upper trapezius and produce knots and pain.

Equally important, the upper trapezius is innervated by the spinal accessory nerve, which is also very intricate. In most cases, nerves travel from the spinal cord directly to the muscles. However, as the name implies, the spinal accessory nerve is unique in that it is composed of two parts: from the spinal cord and from the brain. This is the only nerve in our body that enters and then exits the skull which then innervates to the upper trapezius muscle and the sternocleidomastoid.

Where Does It Hurt

In most cases of upper trap pain, patients report constant ache and burning muscle pain right in the upper trap muscle and neck area. This can happen on one side or both sides. If this is a chronic cases of upper trap pain, active trigger points in the muscle can refer pain into the neck and head and present as a headache. Your nervous system is a lot like a tree, with the base of the tree near your neck and the branches running through the rest of your body. Because of this, its possible to feel the effects of a pinched nerve in other parts of your body besides your neck. Understanding the root cause of your pain is fundamental approach to treating your pain in the long run & will decrease your dependence on painkillers or treatment that only address the symptoms.
